There are times when saying something in a real prim and proper, eloquent fashion is the appropriate thing to do.
There are other times when it is just as appropriate to be blunt and to the point. Losing your starting quarterback at the start of the season is one of them.
As the news about Peyton Manning becomes dangerously close to becoming something that is dreaded and to be avoided in the media world--old--reporters (and bloggers) are being forced to get a little creative in order to keep the Manning injury news relevant.
Karen Guregian of the BostonHerald.com had a little chat with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady the other day about his nemesis being out for most if not all of the season. Brady's response--it sucks.
Okay, he did have a little more to say than that:
“He’s such a competitor. He’s such a tough guy. It sucks not seeing him out there. Hopefully he gets well soon. He’s a huge reason for why the NFL, why people follow it so closely. I think we as competitors, whenever you play great teams, you always want to play them with their best players. He’s been a great one for a long time.”
Brady is a competitor and a tough SOB in his own right. The man knows what its like to be in Manning's shoes having gone down with a season ending injury himself a few years back.
What really sucks now are the official odds that the Colts make the Super Bowl this year. Prior to Manning's latest surgery, the Colts were 14-1; not long, not short. Now it is safe to say that they are considered a long shot. Indianapolis is as much as a 35-1 favorite now (by many books).
The Hilton in Vegas moved the Colts from 14-1 to 25-1 after Peyton's injury news broke, the same as the Detroit Lions and New York Giants.
It is interesting to see that they still have better odds than 15 teams with Manning out of the game. Incidentally, they still have better odds over every other team in the AFC South. Houston has 30-1 odds; the Jaguars and Titans are both 60-1.
